Getting started
Sign up, connect your store and ask for your first change in about five minutes.
1. Create your workspace
Sign up with your work email. Tell us a little about you (a single store, or an agency running client stores) and we set up your workspace. Every plan starts with a 14-day free trial; you add a card through Stripe on the "Choose your plan" step.
2. Connect your store
Enter your *.myshopify.com address and approve the install in Shopify. Kobold asks for two permissions only: read your themes, and write to a theme copy. It never touches checkout, payments or customer data. See Connecting a store.
3. Let Kobold read your theme
Right after you connect, Kobold reads your live theme: sections, snippets, blocks, app embeds, settings and translations. On a theme like Horizon that takes about a minute. You can start writing your first request while it reads.
4. Ask for a change
Write the request in plain words:
Add a discount code field to the cart drawer, under the subtotal. Same style as our newsletter input.
By default Kobold works from your live theme. To work from another theme in the store (an unpublished "Summer 2026" theme, say), click the store pill under the message box and pick it under Work from theme; the live theme has a Live badge. You can still change it until you press Build it. Kobold copies the theme you picked, Pip and Nib read it, and Moss compares the copy against it (not against your live theme). When you approve, you choose: Update Summer 2026 with the changes (nothing is published), or Publish as your live theme.
You can attach files to any message: screenshots or mockups (PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF), PDFs such as brand guidelines, and text or code files (.liquid, .css, .js, .json, .txt, .md). Click the paperclip, paste a screenshot straight into the message box, or drop files on it; up to 5 files per message, 10 MB each. Pip, Nib and Moss see them: "make the bar this colour" with a screenshot works. Large images are sent to the agents at a smaller size; the original stays in the thread.
Your message goes into the thread the moment you send it, and Pip starts right away: the line under Pip says what's happening ("Reading your request…", "Looking through the theme…") and updates as the work moves on. If a message can't be sent, it stays in the thread with Retry, so nothing you typed is lost.
Pip first asks a few questions, one at a time: choose an option (or several), type your own answer, or skip. Then comes a plan: what you'll see, the files it will touch, the files it won't touch, and an estimate in credits (for example "Est. 20–40 credits"). Press Build it when the plan looks right.
5. Review and approve
When Moss has tested the change you get a Ready for review card with before-and-after shots, the QA report and a preview link. The review panel button at the top of the thread (next to the menu) opens the side panel (the sheet on your phone) at any time once there's a copy: the code changes, the QA report, before and after, and the preview. Press Approve & publish, or Adjust to ask for changes.
Nothing goes live without you
Kobold never edits your live theme. Every task is built on a copy, and publishing always needs an explicit approval from someone with the right role.
