Billing and plans
Who bills your plan, how to change or cancel it, and how refunds work.
Who bills your plan
- Starter and Growth are billed on the Shopify bill of the store you choose, alongside your other apps. There's no card to add: you approve the plan in Shopify, and Shopify charges it with your store's bill.
- Agency is billed by card through Stripe, because one Agency plan covers up to 15 stores that can belong to different merchants. See Agency.
Prices are the same either way, in US dollars, per month: see Credits and plans. Credits work the same on every plan and reset on the 1st of every month.
Changing plans
Use Change plan in Settings → Billing.
- Starter ⇄ Growth. You approve the new plan in Shopify. Shopify prorates it on your bill: an upgrade charges the difference for the days left, a downgrade credits it. An upgrade's extra credits arrive right away.
- Starter or Growth → Agency. You check out by card. Once Agency is active, Kobold ends the Shopify plan and Shopify credits the unused days to the store's bill. If you had already cancelled the Shopify plan, Agency starts when the time you paid Shopify for ends, so you never pay twice for the same days.
- Agency → Growth or Starter. Pick the one store to keep. Someone who can approve app charges in that store approves the plan in Shopify (they don't need a Kobold account; you can send them the link). Agency keeps running until then. After the approval, Kobold cancels Agency and Stripe refunds the unused days to your card; the share of this month's Agency credits that those refunded days paid for (above the new plan's allowance) is taken back from your balance. The other stores are disconnected. You get an email when the move is done.
A move to a lower plan that pays back unused days also takes back the extra credits those days bought, so the credits match what you paid for. The confirm shows how many.
Your trial days carry over when you change plan during the trial.
Spending limit
On Starter and Growth, Buy 500 credits · $40 in Settings → Billing is one click: there's no checkout, and the top-up goes on your store's Shopify bill, also during the trial. Shopify only lets an app charge up to a spending limit per 30-day Shopify cycle that you approved with the plan, $400 to start. Billing shows how much of it you've used this cycle and when it resets (on your Shopify billing date, not on the 1st like credits).
- At the limit, top-ups and auto top-up stop until the next Shopify cycle; auto top-up turns itself off and the owners get an email.
- Raise limit asks Shopify for $400 more (up to $2,000). You approve the new limit in Shopify; you still only pay for the credits you buy.
- Development stores get the trial credits only: Shopify doesn't charge them, so they can't buy top-ups.
Move billing to another store
On Starter and Growth the plan sits on one store's Shopify bill. To move it, use Settings → Billing → More → Move billing to another store:
- Install on the new store opens Kobold in the Shopify App Store. Install it on the store that should pay. Kobold never asks you for a store address.
- Right after the install, Shopify asks you to approve the plan on that store.
- Once it's approved, Kobold ends the charge on the old store (Shopify credits its unused days) and disconnects the old store. Open tasks on the old store pause; trial days carry over.
Until you approve, everything stays on the old store. If the approval link runs out, Billing offers a new one.
Cancel
A cancelled plan keeps working until the end of the paid period, on the credits you have. No new monthly credits arrive after a cancel, and what's left expires when the plan ends. You can start a plan again at any time.
- Starter or Growth: Settings → Billing → More → Cancel plan. Uninstalling Kobold from the billing store also ends the plan, with access until the end of the paid period.
- Agency: cancel in the billing portal (Settings → Billing → Manage billing). It ends at the end of the current period.
Price changes
When the price of Starter or Growth changes, nothing on your bill changes by itself. The owners get an email and Settings → Billing shows the new price with Approve in Shopify; until you approve it you stay on your current price, for as long as you like. Once approved, Shopify charges the new price from that day, prorated for the rest of your cycle. If the price of 500 credits changes, you approve the new top-up price the same way. Agency price changes apply at your next renewal, with an email 30 days ahead.
Unpaid Shopify bill
If Shopify can't collect your store's bill, it keeps retrying for a while. When Shopify freezes the charge, running tasks pause and new ones can't start, and Billing shows Pay in Shopify. Once the bill is paid in Shopify, everything resumes.
Refunds
- Starter and Growth: Shopify handles the money. Plan changes are prorated by Shopify as app credit on your store's bill, not as cash. For a refund, contact us; it's paid through Shopify.
- Agency: refunds go back to your card through Stripe. When you move from Agency to a Shopify plan, the unused days are refunded automatically.
- Top-ups: a top-up can be refunded within 14 days of purchase if none of its credits have been used. Plan fees aren't refunded once a billing period has started.
Agency
Agency is billed by Kobold (SAUDADE MEDIA OÜ) through Stripe, separately from your Shopify invoice: the plan, $699 a month, and any credit top-ups you buy on it. You pay by card at checkout, and Stripe sends the receipts.
- Cancel: in the billing portal (Settings → Billing → Manage billing). The plan runs to the end of the period you paid for.
- Refunds: to your card through Stripe. A move from Agency to Growth or Starter refunds the unused days automatically.
